Rima’s Story: Building Safe and Comfortable Schools Begins with Teachers Who Continue to Learn

Rima is a district facilitator for Safe and Comfortable School Culture (BSAN) and a Grade 1 teacher at one of the elementary schools supported by KREASI Morotai.

At the school where Rima teaches, a Violence Prevention and Response Team (TPPK) had already been established, which is now known as the School Child Protection Team (Tim PAS). However, at the time, teachers had not yet received specific training or socialization on the roles, duties, and responsibilities of the team. As a result, cases were often handled based on each teacher’s own understanding and experience.

This limited understanding encouraged Rima to register as a BSAN district facilitator for the KREASI Program in Morotai. She saw the opportunity as a space to learn more about child protection and how to create a safe learning environment for all students.

Through the BSAN district facilitator training, Rima began to understand that creating a safe and comfortable school is not simply about correcting or guiding children when problems occur. Schools also need clear mechanisms to prevent, handle, and follow up on cases of violence.

The material on Safe and Comfortable School Culture helped her see the school’s condition from a different perspective. She learned to recognize different forms of violence, map issues occurring within the school environment, and understand the importance of collaboration among schools, parents, and communities in protecting children.

The training also became a space for reflection for Rima. She realized that, in her efforts to discipline students, she had previously used approaches that were not appropriate.

This experience helped her understand that ending violence requires more than good intentions. It requires the right knowledge and approach so that children feel safe while receiving the support they need.

Equipped with the knowledge she gained during the training, Rima plans to share the materials she learned with fellow teachers at her school. She hopes that more teachers will gain the understanding and skills needed to create a safe, welcoming learning environment that supports every child’s growth and development.

“I took a lot of notes during the training. Later, I want to share them with my fellow teachers so that we can learn together,” she said.

For Rima, this training not only added new knowledge, but also helped her understand that ending violence requires the right approach. This understanding has become an important foundation for supporting children while inviting more teachers to build a safe and comfortable learning environment.
