KREASI Nias Utara, together with the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Nias (UNIAS), conducted a remoting test of two modules on “A Joyful Transition from Early Childhood Education (PAUD) to Primary School” in an FKIP UNIAS classroom in Kota Gunungsitoli. The activity aimed to test and refine the jointly developed modules for use as teaching materials, while also strengthening the capacity of student teachers to apply child-friendly learning approaches during the transition from PAUD to primary school.
The activity was opened by Dean FKIP UNIAS, Yaredi Waruwu, who expressed appreciation to KREASI Nias Utara for the partnership in developing the modules. He emphasized the importance of this training in broadening students’ perspectives on humanistic learning that respects children’s development at every stage. On that occasion, Yaredi stated, “We hope that through this activity, students can gain useful knowledge and later pass it on to their future learners.”
Responding to this, Advocacy Officer KREASI Nias Utara, Ryan, underlined the importance of collaboration between universities and civil society organizations to realize inclusive and joyful PAUD–primary transition practices.
The module trial featured two main presenters: Head of the Primary School Teacher Education Department (PGSD) FKIP UNIAS, Eka Periaman Zai, who delivered Module 1, and Vice Dean II FKIP UNIAS, Noveri Harefa, who delivered Module 2.
In the implementation of Module 1, titled Learning that Supports a Joyful Transition from PAUD to Primary School & Differentiated Instruction, students were introduced to a concept of transition that does not focus on reading, writing, and arithmetic tests. The material emphasized three main focuses of the transition movement: the elimination of literacy and numeracy tests (calistung) in grade 1 admission, the implementation of a two-week introduction period at the beginning of school, and the development of six foundational skills as the basis of school readiness. Participants also watched a reflection video about a child named Ines, which sparked a discussion on the importance of warm, non-intimidating approaches for children on their first day of school. Through the discussion, students affirmed that school readiness should be determined by the development of foundational skills, not by calistung ability.
Module 2, titled Direction and Policy of the Joyful PAUD–Primary Transition Movement, was led by Noveri Amal Jaya Harefa. Students were guided to understand the fundamental reasons why children are entitled to experience a joyful transition, and how learning needs to be adjusted to the pace of each child’s development. Participants then practiced formulating learning objectives, classroom activities, and simple assessments. In the question-and-answer session, several students expressed the need for more time to fully understand the modules, but they also appreciated the new insights gained. Many participants felt that this activity greatly helped them prepare to become future teachers who are more ready and sensitive to children’s needs.
The remoting test series concluded with a post-test as the final evaluation, following an initial pre-test, material delivery, and reflective discussions. This interactive approach is expected to provide a concrete picture of learning practices that are joyful, responsive, and respectful of children’s development at every stage.
