From Being Observed to Becoming a Mentor: Teacher Competency Working Group in Pesisir Barat Turns Observation into Reflection

The Teacher Competency Working Group (Pokja Kompetensi Guru) within the education ecosystem supported by KREASI Pesisir Barat is actively taking steps to improve the quality of education. Through the implementation of a proposal in the teacher capacity-building activity titled “Create, Design, and Plan Learning through Peer Teaching,” held on 11–12 September 2025 at SDN 66 Krui, early childhood and primary school teachers were invited to view classroom observation from a new perspective.

For many teachers, being observed during a teaching session can feel uncomfortable. Feelings of hesitation, fear of judgment, and limited support are often obstacles. Acknowledging this, the Working Group introduced a different approach: observation is no longer about supervision, but a medium for reflection and collaborative learning.

“Observation is part of a teacher’s learning journey. By being open to feedback, teachers can grow more professionally in carrying out their noble role,” emphasized one of the facilitators.

This approach not only encourages teachers to be more confident but also fosters a reflective culture within schools. With cross-sectoral support—from local government to school leaders and education communities—the Working Group strives to make observation a strategic step to strengthen educator professionalism.

This initiative is expected to lay the foundation for the emergence of high-quality teachers who can deliver the best learning experiences for children in Pesisir Barat. Ultimately, this success belongs not only to the teachers but also contributes significantly to the improvement of national education quality.
