Teachers in Halmahera Utara Deepen Understanding of Positive Discipline

KREASI Halmahera Utara initiated a Training of Trainers (ToT) on Positive Discipline and Child Safeguarding Policy, involving five partner schools of the KREASI program, education supervisors from the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag), and the local Department of Education and Culture. The main goal of this activity was to strengthen the capacity of educators and education supervisors in implementing the principles of positive discipline and child safeguarding policies in schools and their workplaces.

Positive discipline is an approach that respects children as individuals and encourages constructive behavior without using physical punishment or emotional harm. On the other hand, the Child Safeguarding Policy is a vital policy aimed at protecting children from all forms of violence, exploitation, neglect, and mistreatment.

Held over four days from 23–26 June 2025, the training was facilitated by a Child Participation Consultant from Save the Children and a Child Protection Specialist from Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI).

Throughout the training, educators absorbed new knowledge and strategies on implementing positive discipline. They also engaged in discussions and experience-sharing that enriched their professional capacity.

The activity was attended by eight teachers, six school principals, and six local government staff. These participants gained practical knowledge they can now apply in their respective roles. This initiative is a significant step in enabling students in Halmahera Utara to access education that nurtures not just cognitive skills, but also emotional and social development.

Educators play a crucial role in creating safe, comfortable, and enjoyable learning environments without compromising discipline. They must be sensitive in balancing fun learning with meaningful understanding—cognitively, emotionally, and socially. Re-learning and embracing the concept of positive discipline is one way to develop this sensitivity.
